This video goes over some simple exercises on how to teach your dog to stop jumping on you! Remember! Dogs jump for a reason! It is either to get your attention, they are over aroused or stressed, or to acquiesce to you (when the dog tries to get to your mouth to lick it) Tips: 1-Teach your dog what you want them to do instead of jumping up FIRST 2- Don’t reinforce jumping up with attention 3- Proof by creating situations your dog will want to jump up in, so that the dog generalizes the behavior. 4- Prevent jumping when you are not in the mood to train your dog, by having your dog on leash or in his pen Dog training clicker training dogmantics dog training kikopup emily larlham private lesson with Murphy and Bogart. @kikopup Have you considered printing out a simple waiver? People sign it to give permission, I believe that’s all you need. Does YouTube work differently?

I really like that you did the ‘scardey human’ on this one, seems like that makes some dogs want to jump on you MORE! Love you vids
My pup has done great with clicker training. I feel better knowing i’m not using physical force or harsh punishments with her.

lol what a cute little fuzz ball.

@kikopup Yes, please make the sequel for big crazy dogs. It is a real problem. Our dog trainer tried to teach me to make the dog lie on a mat near the front door. Even if he could do this for–what, 5 seconds that lasts forever, when released he starts all over with the over-the-top exuberant greeting behavior. The leash does not help whatsoever.

  5. depewny says:

@DaCrystalPup Yeah, we have the same problem.

Another Keeper! Thanks for all of these great videos Emily!

My 60 pound dog has a high drive to jump on visitors and not even allow them in the doorway of the house. Food is not a strong enough of a motivator. Food makes him further stimulated and out-of-control. But I still like your tips here.

Congratulations for this good job. It is a tool that all fans of clicker will be useful. Bravo!

I love your videos! You make it look so easy! How would you “fix” this… If I get in my car to drive out of our gated yard, both my Bichon & Border Collie follow my vehicle. If I let my husband pull out and I walk out, they stay behind (they’ve been “shhhhed” a lot!). How do I train them to stay in the yard as the electric gate is closing & I’m in the vehicle?

Awesome job as always! It is great to see you working with other peoples pups. You just need a red sports car and some leather boots and you can give Victoria a run for her money on tv ;)

Hey Kikopup! Love the video. The only problem is my dog jumps on other people and never jumps on anyone in the family! Should I explain to my friends what to do to encorage no jumping?

  14. Inkspite says:

I love this! It’s great to see you smiling in this video too. :]

This is wonderfull. Instead of focusing of what you dont want and being negative focus on what is good behaveior and click and reward that.

I love this video. I was having the hardest time teaching my dog to stop jumping, because everyone wanted to always pet him regardless of what I said. This technique will still let people show affection towards my dog, but in a much better way. I almost considered a prong collar since I was just so confused as to what I could do since the general population refused to listen to me.

Luckily, this video came in time! Thank you so much. Don’t know how you don’t have your own TV show yet.

Great video. I think it’s the best I’ve ever seen about teaching not to jump up. I have one question though:

Do you think it’s good in all situations not to allow the pet to jump on you if you have a toy?
I always thought that is the thing they should be able to get excited about. I know if I would reinforce my dog not to get too excited about the toy, she would completely ignore it, which wouldn’t be good, because I often teach her with toys(agility, tricks.. )

Oh, I didn’t know about these “rules”. Bummer! Oh well, Thanks for the other ideas. We’ll try them, too. I also got a Manners Minder to see if that helps. I am in awe of you, your talents, and how much energy you must have to do all that you do! It’s such a blessing to others. Thanks!

  19. kikopup says:

@azmauigirl You know the problem with youtube is that I cant have other people in the videos unless they sign… sigh.. the world is a stupid place sometimes… Sometimes putting a baby gate up, where you greet the guests, toss your dog treats for being calm, then when your guests have calmed down and so has the dog you can remove the gate.

  20. azmauigirl says:

Love the video! Great ideas. If possible, would you show what to do when there are more people coming in, including kids, and perhaps someone coming in with a dog to visit, and bigger dogs who are very excitable. I realize that things are always different when you are video taping. And this obviously works with these dogs. I’m also wondering if there is an energy that people bring with them when they come into the room, as she tends to do this more with some than with others?

  21. thatcrazyjack says:

I really like your video and how you show what to do when they do jump up (ignore it).

  22. LittleMsIvy says:

I love how he’s so happy to work with you! I also like how it’s now a reward to not jump up, he’s wagging his tail the whole time when sitting or going into a down :D

  23. hinessa says:

yeah i think it’s adorable when my puppy jumps up on me when i come home..it’s only painful when i wear shorts.

  24. Ju1cypear says:

What if you want your dog to learn to do behaviors that involve jumping AND at the same time you don’t want then to pawn your to the ground every time you come through the dog?

  25. wmlgts says:

@brittanyjadexo My chihuahua is the same exact way! She doesn’t really jump though, but she will act exited to see new people and go sniff them etc., but will back away as soon as they make a move! When she does know someone and greets them, she crouches down and wags her tail and her ears go back. Kinda funny. We’ve been working on her shyness for a looong time.
